gcc itself should not matter, it's just libs like libstdc++ or libgcc that
could cause harm. If you've installed you're alternate version as package
yast/zypper would normally remove it on distro upgrade in case of conflicts. If
you've just used e.g. 'make install' to bypass package management then this may
have indeed damaged your system (ie don't do that :-)). I'll close the bug for
now. Please reopen if you see smpppd segfaulting on a clean system.
