if you can launch any live cd, a fdisk -l copy could be usefull.
Normally a disk can have only 4 primary partitions, so either one of the 4
windows partition is logical (numer 5 and up in fdisk) or the partitionning is
GPT (not likely).
and yes, I encountered several times the case where the BIOS can't load a too
high linux partition. At this time I could make a small boot partition and go
on.
I would first backup the recovery partition (usually it's possible to create
two dvd from a hp utility). I never have seen a hp tools partition.
