--- Comment #48 from Erik Sorenson 2011-08-11 18:44:45 UTC ---
@Vincent: Thanks for your response. FWIW, I can confirm that using
12.1m3(32-bit) and KDE3 Factory, and manually inserting the "Hidden.directory"
line back into /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu in the specified spot fixes the
problem of Kcontrol opening with a blank left side, i.e., no categories.
Kcontrol comes up fine after the insertion.
Also, FWIW, both my 11.4/KDE3 production and 12.1/KDE3 testing partitions have
a ton of desktop files, as listed by Ilya in Comment #27 above, in
"/opt/kde3/share/applnk/.hidden/......".
Also, that /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu" in my production 11.4/KDE3 does
have the "Hidden.directory" line in it (I didn't put it in), using the
11.4-13.18.1 desktop-data-openSUSE from the regular 11.4 openSUSE repo.
Hopefully this will update everyone with what "a normal (but beleagured) user"
is seeing, and give further insight into the least invasive approach to a
solution.
