IANA defines MIME types, it does not care about file naming. What you see at e.g. http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/image/index.html are MIME type names, not file names. My impression is that it leaves it largely to applications to decide which MIME type to slap on. As it should. So your reference to IANA here is not relevant. You can offload the issue to freedesktop.org.
