I'm also experiencing this problem.
OS: opensuse11.4 i586
Package: multipath-tools-0.4.8-57.1.i586
I have no configuration in /etc/multipath.conf
Running multipathd as multipathd -d works. Running it as just multipathd causes
a crash. I'll attach the associated core file.
As a workaround I made these changes to /etc/init.d/multipathd
