Hi Dave,
the zero-length files are outright harmful because
(a) they prevent that update-alternatives creates the symlinks in their place,
(b) they obviously don't work as a daemon (instead, we get something along the
lines of "startproc: cannot execute /usr/sbin/bacula-dir: Exec format error").
A broken installation looks like:
$ ls -l /usr/sbin/bacula-dir
-rwxr-xr-x 0 root root 0 21. Mai 14:35 /usr/sbin/bacula-dir
A corrected installation then looks like this:
$ ls -l /usr/sbin/bacula-dir
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 21. Mai 14:38 /usr/sbin/bacula-dir ->
/etc/alternatives/bacula-dir
$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/bacula-dir
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 21. Mai 14:38 /etc/alternatives/bacula-dir ->
/usr/sbin/bacula-dir.mysql
