Seems this was changed on purpose. See bug#629024 for details. Note: This is
not something LDAP specific (the change was in pam_unix2), local users are
handled the same.
I can't find any reference to the fact that 0 in the expire field should has a
special meaning. If you don't want to have an expire date you can just leave
that field empty (-1 should work as well).
