https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=690895 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=690895#c0 Summary: Kernel Panic after every kernel upgrade (unable to mount root fs) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cymerio@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=427314) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=427314) Photo of the kernel panic User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 After every kernel update/upgrade, and after reboot, the boot process stops at the beginning with a kernel panic, with the message: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) (see the attached pic for the complete message) The kernel updates/upgrades were done always with "zypper up" or automatically with packagekit, always using the official openSUSE kernels. A workaround is to boot with the openSUSE 11.4 DVD, select "Update", and mark the kernel as a package to update, even if it's listed as already updated. Seems like the DVD installer does an extra step that my current installation skips (mkinitrd perhaps?). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Wait until openSUSE makes a new kernel available 2. If automatic updates are configured, do nothing 3. Reboot Actual Results: Kernel panic, cannot boot. Expected Results: System boots normally. This system is updated from a previous one (no fresh install). And I think this problem was also present with some previous version (11.3?). I've done this workaround for ages. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
