parted) print /dev/sda
Model: ATA SAMSUNG HM160HC (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 160GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Number Size Type File system Usage, Flags
1 62,9GB primary ** ufs, FreeBSD 8.1 ***, type=a5
2 33,6GB primary type=83
3 63,6GB extended boot, lba, type=0f
5 2146MB logical linux-swap(v1) ** swap **, type=82
7 186MB logical ext2 ** boot part, ext2 **, type=83
8 27,0GB logical ** lvm: root,/var,/tmp ***, type=8e
6 34,2GB logical ext3 ** home ***, type=83
If I issue 'install' manually putting the right menu.lst location in place it
breaks with an unexplainable error:
(1)> install --force-lba --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,0)
/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,6)/grub/menu.lst
Error 12: Invalid device requested
(2)> install --force-lba --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,0)
/boot/grub/stage2 p /boot/grub/menu.lst
Error 12: Invalid device requested
The unfathomable thing about it is that in (2) I issue exactly the same
install command as is issued by the setup command. Setup does not issue any
preceeding command that would have succeeded. Bizarre, unusable grub.
