Looking into this I've found out what's gone wrong.
Subpixel rendering is NOT enabled upstream in Freetype - TTF Bytecode is.
I got the two confused
GNOME appears to be doing something weird where even when subpixel isn't
available, it renders fonts differently when you change the degree of subpixel
hinting.
This is what led me to believe subpixel was available (as visible in the two
screenshots)
I understand work is being done and an opensuse-community.org repo for subpixel
(plus some improvements) is expected 'in a couple of days' (according to
Yaloki, who manages it)
I'm closing the bug as INVALID
