I finally had a chance to test this patch and it caused a failure of logins.
Here is what I saw:
I started famd on the server running GNOME sessions, it seemed to start
cleanly. I'm not aware of how it communicates or knows how to talk to the
server which has our $HOME/Desktop folders mounted over NFS.
I logged out and back in again and my session hung and was very slow, and I
never got any of my Desktop icons. When I looked at the process list, another
user was the owner of the famd process instead of root.
I had to kill all of my processes manually because the UI never became
responsive. I then halted famd and logged in again and everything worked as
expected.
So the issues are:
- How does famd know which server is the NFS mounted $HOME/Desktop server?
- Does famd have to be running on the NFS server too?
- Was this patch tested in an environment with multiple users on the same
computer logging into GNOME? Ultimately there will be 300 users logged into
this computer.
- The old version of GNOME didn't have any of these processes running and
worked wonderfully. Files placed on the NFS mount would appear with just a few
seconds on the desktop and was very fast.
I don't believe this is yet ready to push onto the update channels.
