hmmm....
Thanks you for limiting number of boot options to just one - 'nomodeset'. But I don't need such extra option for OpenSUSE 11.3, which is also installed on this computer.
11.3 works for you out of the box? That's better than I assumed.
It works as it was tested/debugged for OpenSUSE 11.3 release. :-) See bug: System freezes when KDE4 desktop starts https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586157 This bug is for the same hardware - MSI S271 notebook. and as OpenSUSE 11.3 indeed works fine on this notebook, I am able to extract any required information from Xorg / kernel / drivers on this system. Just let me know what is needed. and BTW it also has KDE 4.5.x from Factory upgrade on top of 11.3 And it works too.
Is 'nomodeset' a temporary solution/workaround?
Hopefully, yes. Not sure whether the situation is going to improve for these old Xpress GPUs. More likely the situation is going to get worse for older GPUs. :-( No longer being tested, out of focus for upstream development, etc.
As https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586157#c19 reminded tome - I have even older system (manufactured in year 2003 ??). Compaq N410c - video chipset identification form Xorg.0.log: ----------------------------------------------- (==) RADEON(0): RGB weight 888 (II) RADEON(0): Using 8 bits per RGB (8 bit DAC) (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4c59) (--) RADEON(0): Linear framebuffer at 0x0000000048000000 (II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected I would give a try to OpenSUSE 11.4 night build on it as well This notebook is 100% available for testing. So older GPUs still can be tested! :) I would be happy to provide feedback. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
