Murlin asked me to look into this, and I confirmed the issue. libvirt is
passing the disk along to kvm with format=raw specified, which obviously isn't
correct.
the recently added security fixes to libvirt regarding disk formats. Libvirt no
longer probes the format by default (there is an option in
/etc/libvirt/qemu.conf called allow_disk_format_probing to enable that for
backwards compatability, but that violates the security issue), and now expects
formats to be specified in the xml definition for a vm.
My understanding is that the disk element of the xml file used to create the vm
would need to have <driver type = 'qcow2'/> added to it to have this scenario
work properly.
