The particular printing dialogs in particular applications and
the general printing dialogs for the Gnome and KDE desktops
should provide some kind of "save" functionality.
But sometimes it is completely missing or sometimes you can
only save settings for a queue but not a default queue.
For example I tried out Gimp. I have the Gutenprint printer
driver package installed which provides an additional print
dialog for Gimp via the gutenprint-gimpplugin RPM.
Gimp's own print dialog does not provide a "save" functionality
(at least on first glance I didn't find one).
In contrast Gutenprint's additional print dialog for Gimp
provides both "print and save settings" and "save settings"
and a somewhat uncommon kind of "default queue" setting:
Via "setup printer" one can select the queue which is used
by Gutenprint's additional print dialog for Gimp so that
this results a default queue setting only for Gutenprint's
additional print dialog.
I.e. it depends on the particular printing dialog which
functionality is available.
Therefore if a particular functionality is missing,
separated enhancement requests for each particular
printing dialog would be needed.
Of course a "Common Printing Dialog" for all applications
could solve the mess but unfortunately its development
is currently stuck, see
