I have also suffered from having a 'nomodeset' wiped out by a kernel update.
However, kernel updates also wipe out the title line. This makes it difficult
to remember exactly what that title was for - especially when doing testing
with many variations of installed sets of openSUSE, and the title line has been
used to provide prompts for what is installed there. Was it the 11.3 x86_64 KDE
4.5 version that was on that partition? Or was it the 11.3 i586 LiveCD version?
The only way is to try to deduce what is missing by looking at the other
titles.
The only way to prevent over-writing of users' settings is for the kernel
update to change only those kernel parameters affected by the change. That
usually involves only the kernel version number in the title line, and the
kernel and initrd version numbers in the kernel and initrd lines. All the other
settings should be left alone.
