OK ... now, does this mean that the
shutdown -h now
stops at the very last line executing the final halt command?
The option -h is for halt, the option -r is for reboot, the option
-P is a modifier for -h and stands for doing power off after halt.
You may try
shutdown -h -P now
if this does not work your hardware or the BIOS/CMOS of your
hardware has a problem with the system call used by halt to
inform the kernel to switch into power off. That could be a
problem with ACPI configuration of the kernel or the BIOS or
of both.
