Retried. Think I got what you want.
1. I checked splash=no
2. removed quiet from menu.1st, not sysconfig append default.
3. logged user off and on, did alt/ctl/F1. it went to ksplashx screen. No
Action.
pressed esc. and terminal logon screen appeared.
4. logged in as root
5. executed shutdown -h now
6. last message displayed was:
system will halt immediately
[ 627.824321] Power Down and hung
used power button to restart system.
7. I do not see the power message, just halt started.
Posted last part of boot.0msg at:

I did notice something. at the power Down message, external disc appears to
shut off and the flashes occasionally. I get the impression that the mbr may be
on that drive, (1TB MyBook drive). It is sdc. Is there a way to tell for sure?
Also restart works fine and if I use restart and go to my 11.2 install on sda.
I can then shutdown correctly.
Please let me know what else I can do. Sorry for the long message.
