Uwe: yes, you answered that for your part with NO. I'm looking for a single

To clarify: no file residing under /boot must contain a disk block that has a
higher LBA than 1031184. If someone can manage that, I can continue looking for
a "grub bug". Else, it's a BIOS problem for sure.
