The 'radeon' module is not loaded after boot.
Weird. It should be loaded, just with KMS disabled.
modprobing it results in

So no issues with loading ATI firmware? Sure that KMS is active? Verify with cat /sys/module/radeon/parameters/modeset 0 means disabled, 1 enabled, -1 default (i.e. KMS enabled). If it is 0 try with 'modprobe radeon modeset=1'.
