The same, or pratically the same problem, i had in OpenSUSE 11.3.
but i had two SATA2 HDDs.
im my multiple boot comp, the default grub that OpenSUSE makes, after
installation, identify the root in the other HDD, and the problem was corrected
manually..
in my case is the HDD disk that was erroneous, example:
(hd1,6) disk that is the correct, booting, and the opensuse installs the grub
as: (hd0,6)...
Seeems to me errors in the automatic installation of grub, identification of
the partitions...
