I agree with the remark that putting load on dom0 is a bad idea when it comes
to a normal server setup. In such a case, indeed, the task of the dom0 is
indeed to service guests. However, another use case that is getting more and
more popular these days is that of a desktop user running a virtual appliance.
Apart from whether it is a bad idea to put such a load on dom0, it does appear
that doing that leads to starvation of the domU. This would mean that also on a
correctly setup server, this can result in a bad performance of domUs in cases
where there is some load on dom0.
In my case, I am not putting load on domU, but when I do (e.g. kernel
compilation using make -j 8 on domU), and then start a similar kernel
compilation on dom0 I am seeing the same phenomenon, where domU is starved,.
Because of this I think it is still a serious problem and it will probably
result in unstable server setups where domUs will sometimes be unresponsive or
extremely slow. Therefore, I think it is premature to lower the priority of
this problem.
I am running this on specific hardware (Core i7-720QM) so perhaps the problems
is related to that. Have you also tested this on similar hardware? Also, I had
a much better experience running the xen live cd (see earlier comment), so it
is definitely a new problem.
