I pulled down kernel-desktop-2.6.33-25.1.x86_64.rpm from 11.2 and yeah, with
the older GCC from 11.2 it is booting again. I've passed on the ftrace issue so
everyone is aware of this coming up in GCC 4.5. I may add a reference in this
week's kernel podcast for good measure.
btw, I'm not sure of the "official" way of rescuing and upgrading but I did a
rescue boot with a Factory CD, bind mounted various bits into the target and
chrooted in to ensure the OpenSUSE mkinird would pick up the right device
nodes. That more or less seemed to work out.
