Your explanation makes sense and I've been able to duplicate it.

It looks like this is the cause:
#define DEFINE_EVENT(template, name, proto, args) \
static struct ftrace_event_call event_##name

Changing it to:
#define DEFINE_EVENT(template, name, proto, args) \
static struct ftrace_event_call \
__attribute__((__aligned__(4))) event_##name

Produces the right alignment in ptrace.o. I'm building a test kernel now.
