It would be nice to guess what is happening. Could you provide some more
details?
Here are possibilities:
Bug in kernel graphics driver causes crash. In this case system does not
respond to ping, short press of off button, nothing. Debugging: kernel
debugging using e. g. serial cable.
Bug in one of X libraries or kernel graphics driver causes crash. It might
cause graphics state corruption. System still works, but access to video is not
posible. System reacts to ping, it is possible to ssh.
Bug in one of X libraries or race condition. It may cause locking mouse and/or
keyboard. System reacts to ping, it is possible to ssh and killing the
screensaver makes system working again.
Bug in xgamma (reported before, hard to reproduce). System works, but all
colors are black. Correct call of xgamma fixes display.
I have a large collection of print quality photos from a variety of sources on
this computer.
And it is possible that photopile attempts to make collage from these photos
and goes out of memory. In this case you may experience heavy disc activity and
extremely slow or no response.
