Summary: Turbo Boost not working on Core i7 Mobile: Some
C-States not available
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.2
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: schaefer.alex@xxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx
Found By: ---
Blocker: ---

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.1.7)
Gecko/20091222 SUSE/3.5.7-1.1.1 Firefox/3.5.7

Turbo Boost does not work on my ASUS PRO62J Notebook. This feature should
increase the clock speed of one of my four CPU cores from 1.6 GHz to 2.8 GHz
when all other cores are idle. Works fine with another well-known OS, but does
not with openSUSE. One of perhaps several reasons is that the only available
C-State is C1:

alex@i7:~> cat /proc/acpi/processor/*/power
active state: C0
max_cstate: C8
maximum allowed latency: 16000 usec
states:
C1: type[C1] promotion[--] demotion[--] latency[003]
usage[00000000] duration[00000000000000000000]

After I saw http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15064, I tried Vanilla
kernel 2.6.33-rc8, and it enables C2, but still no other C-States and no Turbo
Boost.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Do something that uses one CPU core 100%
2. monitor CPU frequency
3.
Actual Results:
7 virtual cores running on 933 MHz, 1 on 1600 MHz

Expected Results:
7 virtual cores running on 933 MHz, 1 on 2800 MHz or at least nearby

Notebook: ASUS PRO62J-JX033C (based on M60J)
CPU: Intel Core i7-720QM
