I encountered what might be the same problem with a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L6820
laptop with an 82845 Intel graphics with 1.2GB of RAM. openSUSE-10.3 is
installed and functioning with the i810 driver (intel driver did not work in
10.3 with this hardware) on this laptop. Using the openSUSE KDE/Gnome (also
community SOAD and LXDE) liveCDs, neither 11.1 nor 11.2 would boot to X
although a boot to text mode worked. Sometimes sax2 would crash when trying to
configure from text, sometimes it would not crash. But when sax2 did not
crash, startx would freeze. A Sidux liveCD has a similar problem. Fedora 12
liveCD did not have the problem and Fedora 12 live CD would boot to a limited
800x600 resolution.
Unfortunately I no longer have access to this laptop, so I can not actively
support this thread's resolution with tests. I do note this thread
http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/422611-bitten-bug-suse-11-2-x11-inte...
where a user booted a Puppy Linux V4.3 and then copied that xorg.conf to
openSUSE-11.2, where a boot worked with the 82845 (where problem symptoms were
similar).
If I can obtain access to this laptop again (and I may not be able to) I will
try the Puppy Linux v.4.3 work around and also see if I can obtain Xorg.0.log
and y2logs (although again, my access to this laptop is limited as the laptop
does not belong to me - its some one else's only PC).
