Also, can you get a dump using atombios for modesetting and set the same the modes in both the working and non-working cases before dumping the regs. That will help minimize the differences.
The above settings didn't make any magic. Should I apply the settings while running X or before I start X? I applied the settings while running X both with at working DVI boot sequence and without. While fiddling a bit with xrandr in a running X session, when killed and restarted the X session and fiddling with xrandr a bit more I found no apparent change of behaviour. At one time while having output to DVI the mode settings became garbled and I needed to restart X in order to have normal output on DVI again. I will need some instructions on how to use atombios for modesetting. 'man radeonhd' says: Option "UseAtomBIOS" "boolean" Selects the mode setting path. The default is chipset dependent.
