I will add another example of this bug. The laptop is a HP Compaq nx6325 with
a AMD Turion TL-60 and a Radeon Xpress 200M 5975 (RS482), with the radeon
driver.
The first installation (clean) appeared to have failed. After developing the
configurations and running the system configuration task, the boot screen
showed a few lines, the computer tried to switch to graphics display, and all
went blank and dead. I tried the repair and rescue options on the installation
DVD, and all kinds of error messages showed up. I thought it was a total
failure. But maybe the configuration was not finished. I tried a fourth time,
waited a long time after the screen went blank, and shut the power off. I kept
the install disk in on restarting, then used the 'boot from the hard disk'
option to start the system. It came up. I was able to configure everything as
I wanted. The only possibly significant error I see on bootup (and not shown
in any files) is that 'staprun' is not found. It is in /usr/bin.
There are still some problems. For awhile, it seemed that I could not restart
the system unless I had the install disk inserted and used the 'boot' option.
Then I found that there was no xorg.conf file. I copied a file from my 11.1
files. It helps a lot, but there are still some failures. Sometimes, I also
get some lines across windows, or left-over patches from previous windows.
It's mostly OK, but far short of all previous systems on the computer.
One final problem. Sax2 (with or without flags) leads to a blank screen and a
dead computer. Every time.
Is there an update to the radeon (not radeonhd) driver? Is there an ATI driver
that will work, and how do I get it and not one that is meant for later chips?
I can provide Xorg.99.log/.log.old, Xorg.0.log/log.old, or other files as
needed. You may have enough already.
