So, that explains why it works on Ubuntu. The application in question is
linked directly or indirectly (that's hard to say from ldd output alone)
against libpthread. If you want to can try to find out which library
is the one that pulls in libpthread.so, by doing this:
% readelf -d <filename> | grep NEEDED
for each involved file. I.e. start with the application, and then go down
the file list that ldd gave you above. The first one that has pthread
in its NEEDED entries is the one that pulls it in. But as written in the
dup entry for this bug report (bug 492793) GNOME upstream is going to solve
this for real by linking libgobject (AFAIU) against libpthread.
