Ah... I got confused about which bug report this was. Thought this was about
rapidly increasing load cycle count on a hard drive. Was wondering why I was
seeing media presence polling. :-)
Sorry about that. So, copying with cp makes much less noise? Two things come
to my mind.
1. Optical drives work faster as they go near the end of the media due to
higher linear speed.
2. If the host doesn't consume the data fast enough, the drive will overflow
the buffer and have to re-seek the data which may cause some noise. Different
drives will cope with situations like this differently.
If you do "dd if=file_to_copy of=/dev/null bs=16M iflag=direct", does it make
the noise?
