It might be that we started to do some readahead and that gives troubles to the drive. What's the value of /sys/block/<device>/queue/read_ahead_kb in 10.3 and 11.1?
The value is the same: 128.
Also it would be useful to find out what exactly triggers the noise... Is it reading any particular file (not exactly the last one)?
No, not the last -- all files. The last one has to be big. Naive analogy -- with runner speeding up, with enough distance to speed up it is harder to stop then.
Or how long after copying does the sound appear?
Immediately.
Maybe you could try running blktrace just after the copying finished (or during the end of it) so that we can see whether kernel sends some commands to the drive which make the noise or what.
I will do it, I just need to find out how to use it.
