Unfortunately I was wrong. A lot of testing revealed that the bug still happens
with all recent kernel versions, including the kernel in the recently released
11.2, both 32 and 64 bit version. The only thing that changed is that with
recent kernels the bug affects my dvd drive instead of the hard drives - that's
one of the reasons why I didn't notice it for long time, I rarely use the dvd
drive and expected the issue to affect one of my hard drives as before.
The other thing that I noticed and why I thought that the issue was gone: I
discovered that the issue comes up during moderate/high network activity. It
somehow seems to be related to the on-board Attansic L1 network "card". If
there's no or only minimal network activity then usually the issue doesn't
appear, but moderate or high network activity (for example I start to download
something) seems to trigger the issue almost immediately. Unfortunately I have
no pci network card to test if disabling the on-board network solves the issue,
I'll try to get one from somewhere.
