Target machine only has MS XP on it, but using the Old USB CD drive on my
desktop machine (OSL 11.0) gives:
rpm $> gzip -cd /mnt/boot/*/loader/initrd | cpio -it
.
modules
parts
parts/00_lib
parts/01_usr
mnt
dev
dev/loop6
dev/zero
..
etc/sbl/profile/y2base
etc/sbl/profile/mc
etc/sbl/profile/y2menu
etc/sbl/profile/yast.color
etc/nsswitch.conf
etc/sbl.conf
sys
.
linuxrc.config
70507 blocks
rpm $>
So I'd say everything is ok with the file itself.
Drive reports thus (dmesg):

it seems to work OK in other respects.
I'm not sure this is worth pursuing further - at least we've documented a
possible issue with some old drives.
