Auto-configuration has existed in the Xserver for quite a while however until
very recently it has not been usable. Important elements had been missing to
adjust settings (like the screen resolution) after the server has been started.
Thus a configuration file was mandatory. To provide an easy way for the user to
configure X SUSE and Novell invested in the development and maintenance of
SaX2.
Many things have changed in upstream X or are about to change which would
require considerable work to keep SaX2 in sync. Thus maintenance of SaX2 would
require an amount of manpower which cannot be provided by the X Team at Novell
today.
With both things in mind Novell has made the decision to no longer invest in
SaX2 but to obsolete it instead.
This is a business decision and this bugzilla is certainly the wrong place to
argue against it.
But lets look at this from another angle:
SaX2 is free software! All it's source code is openly available. Therefore if
Novell is no longer interested in funding its maintenance it's still possible
for anybody interested to pick up this task.
This is what openSUSE (in contrast to the Novell enterprise Linux products) is
all about: it's a platform for development open to everybody. There is no piece
of software in openSUSE which is considered 'owned by Novell'. Anything in
there is there to be picked up by a community around it and to be taken
anywhere this community decides to take it - regardless of whatever business
needs is driving Novell's decisions.
Thus if anyone is interested in maintaining SaX2, please feel free!!
A good place to start a discussion would be the
opensuse-xorg@opensuse.org mailing list :)
