I think I have similar problem on Opensuse 11.0. I have moved mysql from
/var/lib/mysql to /srv/mysql, modified all configs (/etc/my.cnf,
/etc/init.d/mysql), socket is created under /srv/mysql/ but when trying to
connect with PHP (tried mysql, mysqli, pdo_mysql) I'm getting message "Can't
connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'".
