Thanks. First off, try to adjust a bit more volumes:
% amixer set Master -8dB unmute
% amixer set PCM 0dB unmute
Then, avoid to load snd-intel8x0m. Add the following line to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist or whatever.
blacklist snd-intel8x0m
Then reboot once. If this still doesn't work, it might be rather alsa-lib or
alsa-plugins packages. Try to downgrade to the original version of
libasound2.rpm, alsa-plugins.rpm and alsa-utils.rpm.
If this still doesn't work... Well, it's tough. Might it be any
hardware-specific volume control (e.g. bound to keyboard)?
