http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=516415 Summary: vnc server does not work with kdm Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: R.Vickers@cs.rhul.ac.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060214 Firefox/3.0.11 The VNC services served by xinetd to not work with KDM, i.e. typing vncviewer -via servername localhost:2 from a remote client does not start a kdm session as desired. The first hurdle is that you need entries for both localhost and 127.0.0.1 in /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess. This stops you getting the error message "xdmcp fatal error manager unwilling host unwilling". But then you simply get a grey screen. I suspect kdm is misbehaving, but my workround was to edit /etc/xinetd.d/vnc and replace localhost with 127.0.0.1. This problem is also mentioned in http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2009-03/msg01981.html The suggested solution there is to edit /etc/hosts, but my feeling is that components should work with the vanilla /etc/hosts generated by Yast. I am reluctant to edit /etc/hosts in case something else breaks. Our /etc/hosts contains 127.0.0.1 localhost # special IPv6 addresses ::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback fe00::0 ipv6-localnet ff00::0 ipv6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ipv6-allnodes ff02::2 ipv6-allrouters ff02::3 ipv6-allhosts 127.0.0.2 ourhost.ourdomain ourhost [last line censored for this bug report] Software versions: # rpm -qf /etc/xinetd.d/vnc /usr/bin/kdm /usr/bin/Xvnc /etc/hosts tightvnc-1.3.9-80.44 kde4-kdm-4.1.3-10.3.7 xorg-x11-Xvnc-7.4-17.4.1 netcfg-11.1-1.14 Note that similar problems happen can be demonstrated with Xnest, e.g. Xnest :5 -query localhost Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. chkconfig vnc on 2. Edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess 3. Edit kdmrc to allow XDMCP requests 4. vncviewer -via servername localhost:2 Actual Results: Grey screen Expected Results: kdm login screen -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
