http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=515848 Summary: No Default Application is Associates to text files in /var/log Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=299888) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=299888) 1 of 3 screen shots User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042700 SUSE/3.0.10-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.10 The text log files in /var/log exist as text without extension. This makes it hard to associate an application to reliably and repeated open the log files. Application Association with out file extension is possible, but cannot be defined easily without the user going to a lot of trouble file by file. Its nasty and very poor and we should be well past this type of issue after any default type installation with our file type association with all file types installed after default installation. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open File Manager as root 2.try to open any text log file in /var/log...for example 'messages' 3.The error response is one issue. The inability to associate a default application for text file types without extension is harder and should be a default. 4. Try to 'Open' any /var/log file type like 'messages' Actual Results: Its almost impossible to open any /var.log file with a text editor and there is no default application association in KDE4.1 There are other implicated problems with this type of simplistic action as you will experience in debuging this issue. Expected Results: Default file type association with its corresponding application to open the file should be a default and cause no issues for the user - This is really very poor and whilst not considered a major issue in isolation, This questions all the default Application Association for a great deal of file types. This is of major concern as it brings into question our ability to set default association by file type. This should never be an issue after a default installation -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
