Yesterday I had to fix a system where it's novice user shut down while PackageKit was still updating in the background. Of course in the worst possible moment. kernel-default-base was already updated but not kernel-default. Therefore the system only booted in text mode without network drivers. No chance for a novice user to recover. I had to format a usb stick using ext3 to be able to get kernel packages on the system.
