*.ko.gz are such an ugly thing -- ELF files are easy to work with by random
access via mmap(), if you compress them, you destroy this. E.g. depmod will
need to uncompress the modules all at once (so it ends up reading ~90MB worth
of *.ko.gz from disk and needing memory / disk space for all the *.ko). Also,
everyone is trying to reduce their boot time nowadays, modprobe unzipping all
loaded modules goes a bit in the opposite direction. I guess compressing all
*.so and all binaries (UPX) would also save a lot of disk space, but hardly
anyone does this for similar reasons.
That said, iff the above patch is accepted upstream, feel free to submit a
patch that adds a '%define compressed_modules 0/1' to the kernel spec files and
fixes the scripts around kernel/KMPs to work with compressed modules, but I see
little advantage of defaulting to compressed modules in the official distro.
