Summary: ntpd host name not found during system startup
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.1
Version: Final
Platform: i586
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Network
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: mitch@claborn.net
QAContact: qa@suse.de
Found By: ---
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7)
Gecko/2009022800 SUSE/3.0.7-1.1.6 Firefox/3.0.7
When ntpd is started at boot time, I get these messages in the log:
1 Apr 07:46:00 ntpd[4167]: host name not found: us.pool.ntp.org
1 Apr 07:46:00 ntpd[4167]: couldn't resolve `us.pool.ntp.org', giving up on it
when I check the host name, it is fine:
host us.pool.ntp.org
us.pool.ntp.org has address 204.152.189.171
us.pool.ntp.org has address 198.247.173.220
us.pool.ntp.org has address 66.79.152.35
us.pool.ntp.org has address 128.113.28.67
us.pool.ntp.org has address 64.73.32.134
If I restart the ntpd after boot, it works fine:
1 Apr 09:05:39 ntpd[9363]: synchronized to 204.152.189.171, stratum 2
1 Apr 09:05:44 ntpd[9363]: time reset +4.718092 s
As discussed on the mailing list, may be a timing problem - the network is not
fully operational when ntpd starts?

## Radio and modem clocks by convention have addresses in the
## form 127.127.t.u, where t is the clock type and u is a unit
## number in the range 0-3.
##
## Most of these clocks require support in the form of a
## serial port or special bus peripheral. The particular
## device is normally specified by adding a soft link
## /dev/device-u to the particular hardware device involved,
## where u correspond to the unit number above.
##
## Generic DCF77 clock on serial port (Conrad DCF77)
## Address: 127.127.8.u
## Serial Port: /dev/refclock-u
##
## (create soft link /dev/refclock-0 to the particular ttyS?)
