With the madwifi driver things were not very good, but better than with the
ath5k.
This morning kernel update is actually making things a bit better.
2.6.27.19-3.2-pae
ath5k loads up, connect. But there is still a lot of loss:

FWIW, homer is my server here, that is connected to the wireless AP. Note the
time and the packet sequence.
In the general use case, I reopened my Firefox, and most of the tabs either
timed out, or got a connection reset. Worse, the https to the server on the
local network was actually in error.
Switching back to the wire, it works.
Also it used to work with the X60 with a ipw3945 (I can't tell if it still does
as I had to return the machine).
