Thanks for the info Jon.
If you perform a 'sync', the data you write should hit the nbd device much
faster (otherwise it's being cached). It should not take more than a single
write to nbd to timeout the device.
Concerning the debugflags, did you unload and reload the nbd module? You should
see something like the following when you load the module:
Feb 9 09:48:27 aristotle kernel: nbd: registered device at major 43
Feb 9 09:48:27 aristotle kernel: nbd: debugflags=0xff
Also, I don't know how familiar you are with md, but one thing you can do to
eliminate reads from the nbd is make it write-only.
