I think the problem is the "-3° C" in your weather. It's too cold to bother
setting a background.
Seriously, the only thing that looks strange in your .xsession-errors is this:
(nautilus:12897): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Two different plugins tried to
register 'NautilusBurn'.
I can't think of how that would screw up the background, but it's weird anyway.
A few questions:
1. Can you disable nautilus extensions one by one (just move the files away
from /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0 temporarily) and see if that works?
2. What happens if you change your background image with the capplet?
3. What if you do
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /desktop/gnome/background
Does the default background appear? And then reconfigure your background?
