https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468267 Summary: Linux boot entry vanished, incomplete initrd, bad translation for popup after kernel upgrade Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=266770) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=266770) Popup (German) that says nothing to the typical, maybe even expert user User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.19) Gecko/20081213 SUSE/1.1.14-0.1 SeaMonkey/1.1.14 Yesterday's kernel update produced a popup message (German) that didn't say anything to me (other than some problem occurred), after reboot (as suggested) the GRUB menu only had a "Diskette" (floppy) boot entry. When fixing the GRUB menu, the kernel (kernel-pae) failed to recognize the format of the initrd. It turned out that during the update process the /boot filesystem was full. However simply doing a "mkinitrd" (via rescue system, some mounting, and chroot) could fix the problem. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install kernel update 2. Reboot Actual Results: error message popup that says nothing openSUSE boot menu entry vanished initrd is corrupted System fails to boot Expected Results: A reasonable error message A valid boot menu A non-corrupted initrd A system that boots after kernel update Leaving a system unbootable after an update is at least a "major" bug IMHO. Maybe it would be preferable not to start the update when the free disk space is considered to be too low. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
