--- Comment #17 from Joseph Comfort 2009-01-21 22:00:13 MST ---
Try as I may, the pop-up 'broken pipe' message does not show up when running
strace. I will attach a log file anyway. It represents: start yast2; start
software manager, cancel (repeat 2 or 3 times); start software repositories,
cancel. Maybe the message gets intercepted.
I also tried valgrind, with trace-children. It starts up, runs a little bit,
and dies. The messages on the xterm are:
hp1520:~ # valgrind --trace-children=yes --log-file=valgrind_broken.txt yast2
/sbin/yast2: line 27: yast2/lib/YaST2/bin/yast2-funcs: No such file or
directory
/sbin/yast2: line 250: set_lang_from_sysconfig: command not found
/sbin/yast2: line 178: check_qt: command not found
Qt GUI wanted but not found, falling back to ncurses.
/sbin/yast2: line 279: check_ncurses: command not found
Something is wrong with the YaST user interface.
The yast2-funcs program is in /usr/yast2/lib/YaST2/bin; there is no yast2...
directory structure. I will attach the valgrind output file.
The first time I tried valgrind, I had another message that yast2-gtk was
missing. I installed the rpm. This particular message went away, but the
'broken pipe' message still happens. I didn't keep everything, but I recall
the valgrind files were quite different before and after the yast2-gtk rpm was
installed. This rpm apparently does not show up as a dependency to something
else. It may not even have been installed initially because I do not recall
deleting it (or having any reason to).
The 'broken pipe' message does not always occur. Sometimes, I need to repeat a
start/cancel sequence a few times to get it. In practice, it is not limited to
'cancel', but can happen on any completion of an action.
These outputs are from a computer at home. Earlier at work, one of my
computers showed the 'broken pipe' message, and then (after an update), I have
not seen it since. (The same updates at home had no effects.) I will
double-check tomorrow.
I briefly saw a 'broken pipe' message on a SuSE 10.3 system earlier today --
the first I was aware of it on that system.
