I'm as lost as you're, so trying b5 sounds good. Can you partition the drive
such that both b5 and gm are installed on the machine? So that tests can be
repeated multiple times? Once you have b5 and gm installed, please do the
followings.

1. Post boot log from b5 and gm.
2. Post "hdparm -I /dev/sr0" output from b5 and gm.
3. Run the mplayer test.

The thing is that if you're on pata_ali, b5 or gm, you're using PIO and it's
not all that surprising to see choppy DVD playback, so I'm a bit more curious
why it ever worked on b5 at this point.
