Eh... haven't used kdump so I'm as newbie as you, but if the machine just stops
hard without spitting out oops or error messages, I doubt it would be helpful.
Such hangs are not directly from the cpu and the software. The controller is
stopping while holding the bus. Driver may be able to do things differently to
improve the situation but dumped cpu and memory status aren't gonna be too
helpful in finding it.
That said, the patch shouldn't have anything to do with the underlying failure
conditions. ie. w/ or w/o the fix, the errors coming from /dev/sr0 are the
same. If they differ, the difference is NOT caused by kernel update. Nothing
which can change such behavior made into the kernel via the update. So, what I
recommend is to find out what those other "conditions" are. Please try
different media and see whether there's any pattern arising from it.
