OK, I seem to keep confusing boot sector and MBR. So to clean up, as far as I
remember boot sector = first physical sector of disk. Master Boot Record (MBR)
first sector of partition.
As per comment #3 the MBR of hd0,5 (/) and hd0,6(/home) are all zeroes.
I dug an old Grub Boot Disk out of my diskette box, and it seems that GRUB
fails to see the file system, although it reports back file type ext2fs when I
do root (hd0,5) or root (hd0,6) respectively.
Yet when I try kernel (hd0,5)/boot/ an press tab to display the content, Grub
complains about non existing file system. But that maybe due to an outdated
version of grub, as I can read/write to both / and /home from Windows.
