The "root-user only" problem can be device-file permissions. Check the output
of "getfacl /dev/snd/*". Usually the login-user appears there. For example,
in my case,

% getfacl /dev/snd/controlC0
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/snd/controlC0
# owner: root
# group: audio

Note "user:tiwai" line.

This ACL setup is done only via graphical login using KDM or GDM. Not XDM or
linux console.

Anyway, the file permission issue is a totally different thing, and it seems
that Johan already fixed his setup, let's close this bug.
